LEVITICUS

Week 1 - OVERVIEW

Some of the chapters are between man and God, others are between man and man. As the prophets and Jesus tell us over and over, our relationships with others is part of our worship of God.

Ch. 1-6 are on offerings, what an offering is for, how it is to work, what are acceptable sacrifices, how they are to be sacrificed.  Ch. 7 is on peace offerings and the priest’s part of the sacrifices, since they would be tending the temple and the people and not have land for themselves to grow grain and raise animals.

Ch. 8 is about the consecration of Aaron and his sons, the first priests who’s responsibilities were to take care of the tent of meeting and the mercy seat and ark, in short the moveable sanctuary.

Ch. 9 describes Aaron offering the first sacrifices.

Ch. 10 shows what happens when we are disobedient.  Important point, God tells us what He wants and how He wants it done.  Anything else dishonors Him.

Ch. 11 describes the law for animals for food.  Here, God tells the Israelites what foods they may and may not eat, what is clean and unclean.

Ch. 12 contains the laws for the new mother, different for a son than a daughter.

Ch. 13-14  are long chapters regarding leprosy.

Ch. 15 describes what had to be done to cleanse a man of uncleanness.

Ch. 16-17 give the laws for Aaron’s making atonement for himself, his family and the whole of Israel.

Ch. 18 has the laws regarding sexual immorality

Ch. 19 tells us the importance of keeping the commandments and how we are to deal with other people, the animals and the earth God has given us.

Ch. 20 is again about sexual immorality plus laws against human sacrifice.

Ch. 21-22  give the laws about the priests.  Remember that is all of us. We are to be a nation of priests. (Rev. 1:6)

Ch. 23 discusses of the holidays God ordained

Ch. 24 describes the lamp and showbread and of administering justice.

Ch. 25 describes the Sabbatical year and year of Jubilee.

Ch. 26  outlines the blessings of obedience and result of disobedience.

Ch. 27 places values on everything.

Study Questions

Leviticus Week 1

1. List which chapters, laws seem particularly relevant today?  Irrelevant?  Why?

2. Read Romans 3:1-26.  How are these laws to affect us, since we are no longer under law? How are we to take 2Tim 3:16-17 16All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

3. Two of Aaron’s sons offer sacrifices NOT according to God’s commandments (We’ll do it this way.”). The fire of their sacrifices consumed them.  They died.  God through Moses explained to Aaron, “By those who come near Me I will be treated as Holy, and before all the people I will be honored.”  (10:3) Why did God punish these men, was it what they did or why they did what they did?
